Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage:  What we stand for:

What is Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage?

Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage has the same great chocolate taste as when it was called Sealtest Chocolate Milk.

Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage is an excellent source of protein and vitamin A. It is high in calcium and a good source of vitamin D which enhances the absorption of calcium, for the development and maintenance of strong bones and teeth. It also contains sugar, and natural cocoa for energy and a delicious chocolate taste.

Nutritious and tasty, chocolate dairy beverages, like other dairy products, are part of a healthy diet as mentioned in Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating.

At Sealtest, we have built family memories for generations, by providing quality dairy products that are both delicious and wholesome, and which can help make any time a time to remember.

Why is Sealtest Chocolate Milk now called a "chocolate dairy beverage"?

Canadian regulations state that any “milk” that contains modified milk ingredients cannot be called “milk”. Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage is still all-natural, but it contains both milk and modified milk ingredients as well as cocoa powder, and sugar, so it now has to be called a dairy beverage.

The change in name is a part of the Canadian government’s overall aim to improve the clarity of communication on all food packaging.

Please visit the site of the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) for more information on food labeling.

Is the dairy beverage still pure, fresh, natural and safe, like regular milk?

Yes, just like all Canadian milk, there are no rBST hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or pesticides in any Sealtest milk or dairy beverage.

All the milk and the modified milk ingredients in Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage are locally sourced.

Does the change to "dairy beverage" mean that you are making the product more cheaply ?

No, we have had modified milk in our recipe for many years and listed it on the package. We still start with fresh, pure milk and so still have the benefits of milk: minerals such as calcium, high-quality protein, and vitamins as well as natural cocoa powder and sugar for taste and energy.

Unlike some other products, 91% of the recipe for Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage still comes from milk. The remainder is cocoa and sugar.

What are "modified milk ingredients"?

We use the buttermilk from butter, as well as other all-natural milk ingredients to ensure that our Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage has the taste and texture you love.

In fact, these natural milk elements are often rich in nutrients. Further, they are locally sourced, from local Ontario farms.

And, as always, there are no rBST hormones, antibiotics, preservatives or pesticides in  milk. These things are not permitted in Canada.

Why does it still say "Chocolate Milk" on the 237 ml and 473 ml cartons?

Certain contracts require that we provide a ‘chocolate milk’ so we have changed our long standing recipe to meet the new interpretation of the regulations.  The 237 ml and 473 ml sizes will be Chocolate Milk.  This product will still have the same great taste as Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage and is available in many foodservice and convenience store locations.

Is there more fat or more calories than before?

No, changing the name of the product does not mean the fat or calories will change anymore than the taste.  Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage is a delicious, nutritious treat to be enjoyed anytime of the day.

We are committed to producing milk, milk products, and dairy beverages of outstanding quality, taste and nutrition.

Can a product made with modified milk ingredients be good for you?

The Dairy Farmers of Canada have an excellent site that explains many of the nutritional benefits of the ingredients that make up milk, including the milk in Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage.

For example:

Weight Management

According to more than 30 scientific research studies, a diet rich in calcium could make it easier to maintain a healthy weight or lose excess weight.  In fact, it appears that calcium could make the body use fat as an energy source more efficiently and reduce fat storage in cells.  Also, it seems that milk and dairy products could achieve this more effectively than calcium supplements, which suggests that other milk ingredients, such as protein, could play an important role, perhaps by reducing appetite.  This weight loss could be even more effective in people who generally have a low milk products intake.

Calcium:  Milk products:  The most reliable source of calcium

Throughout our lives, calcium is necessary for many of our body's vital functions. Milk products are considered to be the best source of calcium as they contain large quantities of it and it is well absorbed by our bodies.

In addition, since calcium is found naturally in milk, it is evenly distributed within the milk container. Therefore, the calcium from milk doesn’t sink to the bottom of the container the way it can when it’s added to other beverages, such as soy beverages. That makes milk, and dairy beverages, including chocolate dairy beverages, such as Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage, very reliable sources of calcium.

Vitamin D:  Unsuspected benefits

Vitamin D is necessary to help your body absorb and use the calcium found in the foods you eat. For this reason, it plays an important role in the maintenance of healthy bones.

According to recent studies, vitamin D may also contribute to the prevention of colon cancer, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, and type 1 diabetes.

Research shows that a healthy diet that includes milk products may play a role in preventing metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes.  Metabolic syndrome is defined as a combination of interrelated symptoms (e.g., abdominal obesity, hypertension, hypercholesteremia) that substantially increases the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.  It affects approximately one quarter of the adult population in the Western world.

Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a disease characterized by low bone mass and deterioration of bone tissue. This leads to increased bone fragility and risk of fracture, particularly of the hip, spine and wrist. People with osteoporosis therefore have a quality of life that is considerably reduced and can end up losing functional independence. In Canada, 1 in 4 women and at least 1 in 8 men over the age of 50 years have osteoporosis. An estimated 2 million Canadians may be at risk of osteoporotic fractures during their lives.

The best strategy for fighting osteoporosis consists in building and maintaining good bone stores from childhood. In fact, there is a lot of evidence demonstrating that higher calcium intakes increase bone gain during growth, postpone age-related bone loss, and reduce the risk of osteoporotic fractures. It is well known that milk and milk products represent the most reliable sources of calcium, not to mention other nutrients that contribute to bone health (protein and magnesium, for example). It should be noted that the calcium and vitamin D found together in milk and dairy products is thought to be particularly important for bone health, since vitamin D improves the absorption of calcium, which is the building blocks of solid bones. Moreover, certain studies show that the calcium in milk products could be better for bone health, and possibly the prevention of osteoporosis, than calcium supplements.

An excellent source of calcium, Sealtest Chocolate Dairy Beverage is a part of a healthy balanced diet, and is an easy way to get your children to get the nutrients they need to help prevent major disease.

Why are the DFO so negative about Chocolate Dairy Beverages?

The DFO represents the Ontario dairy farmers who are concerned about products that pretend to be made from milk, which may be misleading to consumers.

You can go to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) site for legal definitions of products and for an understanding of the laws regarding food labelling, but we at Agropur, Division Natrel will never sell a substandard product, nor will we knowingly mislead consumers about what our products are or what they contain.
